Welcome to our latest crochet pattern! Dive into the world of advanced beginner crochet with our adorable Beach Bear Security Blanket. This charming creation is a delightful project and would provide comfort to a newborn baby in the NICU. This design was part of the 2023 Preemie Crochet Challenge hosted by my friend Helen at Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

Materials:
120 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Print, 5 oz/142 grams, 252 yards/230 meters in Float Along.
73 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids, 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Toasted Almond.
20 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids, 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Light Taupe.
15 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids, 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Brown.
HOOK: J/10 6.0 mm; G/6 4.0 mm

Gauge:
11.5 stitches x 6.5 rows = 4” x 4” square blocked.
Pattern used for gauge: DC

Notes:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Lovey blanket is done in rows.
- Teddy bear head, ears, nose, and muzzle are done in continuous rounds. Do NOT join while making each of them. Use stitch markers to know where your first stitch in the round is.
- Sl St does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
- Repeat stitches between * and * around.
- Alternative to MC – Ch 2; work number of SC specified in the 2nd chain from the hook.
- Ch 4 counts as a treble crochet.
Pattern Instructions:
Blanket:
R 1: Using Color A and J Hook, ch 35; SC in the 2nd chain from the hook; SC in the next chain. *HDC in the next ch; DC in the next ch; TR in each of the next 2 chains; DC in the next ch; HDC in the next ch; SC in each of the next 2 chains.* Repeat across until the end of the row. Turn.
R 2: Ch 4 (counts as first TR); TR in the next st; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts. *HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in each of the next 2 sts; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts.* Repeat across until you have 4 sts left. HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in each of the next 2 sts. Turn.
R 3: Ch 4; TR in the next st; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts. *HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in the each of the next 2 sts; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts.* Repeat across until you have 4 sts left. HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in each of the next 2 sts. Turn.
R 4: Ch 1; SC in each of the next 2 sts. *HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in each of the next 2 sts; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts.* Repeat across until the end of the row. Turn.
R 5: Ch 1; SC in each of the next 2 sts. *HDC in the next st; DC in the next st; TR in each of the next 2 sts; DC in the next st; HDC in the next st; SC in each of the next 2 sts.* Repeat across until the end of the row. Turn.
Repeat rows 2, 3, 4, and 5 until required length – Mine I did till approximately 11” long.
Bear Head:
Worked in Continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker for your beginning stitch.
Rnd 1: Using Color B and G Hook, create MC; 6 SC in MC (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: *SC in the next 2 sts; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: *SC in the next 3 sts; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: *SC in the next 4 sts; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (36 sts)
Rnds 7-12: SC in each st around. (36 sts) (6 total rounds)
INSERT SAFETY EYES BETWEEN ROUNDS 7 & 8 WITH 6 STS BETWEEN THE EYES APPROXIMATELY.
Rnd 13: *SC in the next 4 sts; sc2tog.* Repeat around. (30 sts)
Rnd 14: *SC in the next 3 sts; sc2tog.* Repeat around. (24 sts)
****START STUFFING****
Rnd 15: *SC in the next 2 sts; sc2tog.* Repeat around. (18 sts)
Rnd 16: *SC in the next st; sc2tog.* Repeat around. (12 sts)
****FINISH STUFFING****
Rnd 17: Sc2tog around. (6 sts)
FO with a 6” tail to sew to the blanket.
Using a darning needle, weave in and out the front loops to close the hole.
Ears – Make 2:
Worked in continuous rounds.
Rnd 1: Using Color B and G Hook, create a MC; 6 SC in MC. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (18 sts)
Rnds 4-6: SC in each st around. (18 sts) (3 total rounds)
FO with a 6” tail to sew to head.
DO NOT STUFF. Fold flat & sew ends closed.
Muzzle:
Worked in continuous rounds.
Rnd 1: Using Color C and G Hook, create MC; 6 sts in MC. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: *SC in the next 2 st; 2 SC in the next st.* Repeat around. (24 sts)
Rnds 5-6: SC in each st around. (24 sts) (2 total rounds)
FO with a 6” tail to sew to head.
Nose:
Worked in continuous rounds.
Rnd 1: Using Color D and G hook, ch 5; SC in the 2nd ch from the hook; SC in the next 2 ch; 3 SC in the last ch. Working down the opposite side of the chains, SC in the next 2 sts; 2 SC in the last ch. (10 sts)
DO NOT JOIN.
Rnd 2: *2 SC in the next st; SC in the next 2 sts.* Repeat once. 2 SC in the last st. (14 sts)
Rnd 3: SC in each st around. (14 sts)
FO with a 6” tail to sew to muzzle.
Assembly:
- Sew Ears on either side of the head from Rnds 2-8 approximately.
- Sew Muzzle between eyes from Rnds 9-15 approximately and stuffing lightly before finishing sewing the muzzle on.
- Sew Nose on top of the muzzle lightly stuffing before finishing the sewing from Rnds 3-7 approximately.
- Embroider mouth on the muzzle. See previous picture from the muzzle.
- Sew Bear Head onto the center of the blanket.
